Auburn University Graduate Level Brewing Science

Auburn University offers two distinct graduate programs in Brewing Science and Operations – a Graduate Certificate and Master of Science program. The Graduate Certificate Program is designed to prepare students for successful career entry in the malting, brewing and distilling industries, while the Master of Science Program provides additional indepth study for advanced placement in the craft brewing industry. Eligible students have the option of enrolling in either program with all credits from the Graduate Certificate Program counting towards the Master of Science Program.

First-of-Their-Kind Programs in the Southeastern U.S.

Both programs are offered through the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management at Auburn University and are the first of their kind at the graduate level in the Southeastern United States. Both programs are entirely online. This distance education format marries traditional educational approaches with real world application, leading to a state-of-the-art interactive learning experience, the Brewing Practicum. To this end, the program has partnered with Oskar Blues Brewing, the Alabama Brewing Industry and Craft Brewers nationally, to showcase best practices in all aspects of the brewing process and brewing industry. Students attend at least one residency weekend over the course of the program at the Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, North Carolina, or Longmont, Colorado, for detailed hands-on instruction on the operation of a world-class commercial craft brewery. The program is also proud to partner with Oskar Blues on the award of several targeted scholarship opportunities. Program faculty, our on-campus microbrewery and support laboratories will be housed in the brand-new Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center (https://ranecenter.auburn.edu/), which will house the Hospitality Management Program at Auburn from the fall semester 2022. Among other outlets, the Center will have a fully commercial microbrewery and laboratory to support programming efforts and provide real-world hands-on experience to students while visiting campus.
